MOVIE QUOTES #2

Re-watched Shrek with my little sisters the other night which inspired this:

Gingy: Do you know the muffin man?

Lord Farquaad: The muffin man?

Gingy: The muffin man.

Lord Farquaad: Yes, I know the muffin man. Who lives down Drury Lane?

Gingy: Well, she’s married to the muffin man…

Lord Farquaad: The muffin man?

Gingy: The muffin man!

Lord Farquaad: She’s married to the muffin man…

Ain’t that amazing. 😀

ON: FILM FAVOURITES #1

I’ve been writing impromptu movie reviews on this blog for about two months, and I realised that I actually haven’t talked about myself that much. So here are a few fun favourites to help you get to know me. Hope you enjoy!

WARNING: I will probably list about 8 responses to each question 🙂

Fave movie(s) of all time:

  • If I had to pick one, probably Inception. And all the Nolan movies after that. Others off the top of my head include Drive, Avatar, the Apes trilogy, The Last Samurai, etc.

MOVIE QUOTES #1

Hi guys! I want to get into posting a range of content about movies and not just reviews, so we’ll start with a little mini-series of quotes about once a week-ish on this blog! Hope y’all enjoy the first instalment.

A classic from one of my favourite films, Memento.

  • I have to believe in a world outside my own mind. I have to believe that my actions still have meaning, even if I can’t remember them. I have to believe that when my eyes are closed, the world’s still there. Do I believe the world’s still there? Is it still out there? … Yeah. We all need mirrors to remind ourselves who we are. I’m no different.

And the lovely Guy Pearce! 🙂

Leave any suggestions for next week in the comments! Love y’all.

ON: THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. (2015)

The Man From U.N.C.L.E. is an action spy comedy based on the 60s TV show. It’s directed and co-written by Guy Ritchie and stars Henry Cavill, Armie Hammer, Alicia Vikander, Elizabeth Debicki, Hugh Grant and Jared Harris.

In the early 1960s during the height of the Cold War, CIA agent and ex-thief Napoleon Solo must put aside all hostilities and team up with KGB agent Illya Kuryakin and ‘German chop-shop-girl’ Gaby Teller on a mission to thwart the plans of a criminal organisation working to construct a nuclear bomb.

ON: DRIVE (2011)

Drive is a crime drama/thriller directed by Nicolas Winding Refn and stars Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan, Oscar Isaac, Bryan Cranston and more. It tells the story of a mysterious, unnamed Hollywood stunt driver (Gosling) who moonlights as a getaway driver for criminals at night. He develops a relationship with his neighbour Irene (Mulligan), and ends up being drawn into a dangerous criminal underworld when her husband Standard (Isaac) is released from prison.

I tried to make sure I knew as little as possible about Drive before I watched it. I’ve heard only rave reviews about it, and because I figured it was a bit more of an arthouse film (which I am a big fan of, btw) I wanted to go in with a fresh perspective.

Well.

ON: MY MOST ANTICIPATED MOVIES OF 2018

Different post today! I still can’t get over the fact that it’s 2018 XD

Here’s a list of some of the movies I’m looking forward to most this year:

1 – AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR

My first post on this blog was actually a look at the Infinity War Trailer (long story – first post was meant to be a review of The Prestige, but on the morning of the launch date the trailer was dropped so… :D) which you can read here. But WOWZEE I AM HYPED. I’m a massive Marvel geek, my favourite blockbusters are Civil War and Iron Man, and the trailer looks fricking kick-ass and, like, Captain America with a beard. What’s not to love?

ON: NOW YOU SEE ME (2013)

Now You See Me is a heist-thriller-I-guess directed by the French Louis Leterrier and stars an ensemble cast of Jesse Eisenberg, Mark Ruffalo, Woody Harrelson, Dave Franco, Isla Fisher, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman and Melanie Laurent. The plot follows the Four Horsemen, a group of illusionists/magicians who pull off a series of heists masked as illusions. This pits them in a cat-and-mouse game with FBI agent Dylan Rhodes and Interpol agent Alma Dray, who are determined to bring them to justice.

Pre-movie musings:

  • I *love* magic. I even practise magic tricks sometimes. And magic movies (The Prestige!!!) are the best. So I”m kind of looking forward to this?
  • Let me IMDB this director for a mo… okay, he’s reponsible for the first 2 Transporter movies (eye roll), the Incredible Hulk (half-hearted shoulder wiggle) and Clash of The Titans (projectile vomit). Not sure what to expect here.
  • What a great cast. I’m a big fan of Mark Ruffalo and Jesse Einseberg, Woody Harrelson is always great aha, and Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman together in one movie whoo! This had better be somewhat decent.

ON: STAR TREK: BEYOND (2016)

I had a lovely routine Star Trek marathon on the weekend (6am – 12pm every month or so), so here’s a review of Beyond for you!

Star Trek: Beyond is the third film in the reboot franchise, directed by Justin Lin and written by Simon Pegg and Doug Jung. The cast features the return of the entire crew (Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, John Cho, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin, yada yada), and notably Sofia Boutella and Idris Elba as new characters.

In the film, Kirk and the crew become stranded on an unknown planet after the destruction of the Enterprise. Together they must stop a deadly enemy with a hatred for the Federation from starting a galactic war.

First and foremost, I am a massive Star Trek geek. I only watched Wonder Woman for Chris Pine (read: Chris Pine’s eyes. XD) And I shed tears when Anton Yelchin died. So warning – there may be a little bias in this review!

ON: SPOTLIGHT (2015)

Spotlight is a crime/journalistic drama based on a true story, in which the investigative journalism unit ‘Spotlight’ of the Boston Globe uncovered a massive systemic child molestation and subsequent cover-up by Catholic priests. It is directed by Tom McCarthy and features an all-star cast including Michael Keaton, Mark Ruffalo, Rachel McAdams, Liev Schreiber and Stanley Tucci.

When I was younger (i.e. 11) I actually wanted to do investigative journalism because JUSTICE. I’m a big fan of journalistic movies e.g. Zodiac, Nightcrawler, All The President’s Men, so when I found this, with its amazing cast and row of accolades, I knew I was looking forward to it.

ON: JOHN CARTER (2012)

Just a quick one for New Year’s!

John Carter (of Mars) is based on the popular Barsoom books by Andrew Rice Burroughs in the first half of the 20th century. It stars Taylor Kitsch in its titular role, as well as Lynn Collins, Ciaran Hinds, Willem Dafoe in its supporting.

The film tells the story of Carter, a veteran sometime in the 1800s who inexplicably wakes up on Barsoom (Mars) where he can jump (sak) due to the lower gravity, for which he is imprisoned by the Tharks, four-legged green Martians. He is then pulled into an epic conflict between warring kingdoms of Barsoom, involving a princess pitted against her would-be husband, the leader of the Red Martians.
